Afraid of commitment?

“In the City” 49 inches by 70 inches

The Boston quilt is back up on the design wall!! I have been working on this Boston collage quilt so long that now that I’m at the point of attaching the buildings to the backing fabric I find myself almost afraid to do it. I guess I’m afraid to make a mistake at this point. I’ve never had this fear before. Getting the buildings back into position was not that easy. I couldn’t really go on just the pattern because when I printed actual photos of the buildings to scale they were a little off from the original pattern. And a little off of a bunch of buildings really adds up for the whole quilt. Of course it doesn’t really matter that they did not match the pattern exactly. This week I had to add some more windows to some of the building because more of them were exposed than the original plan.

I added more fusible to the backs of the buildings and probably will still need to use some Roxanne’s glue baste as well. My plan at this point is to take off the buildings near the bottom and the large brownstones on the left and fuse the other buildings down and stitch the outside edges of those building and get them locked into position. Then I will add the others back and stitch them.  Not sure it’s a good plan, but this quilt is so large that I feel I must do it in stages. This quilt is so big that it down not fit on my cutting table so I can’t really lay it out there. It’s even bigger than my design wall. Before quilting it’s 49 inches by 70 inches. The title is going to be “In the City.” The other thing that I’m thinking is other than the buildings that meet the sky I probably won’t need to use stabilizer since there are so many overlapping layers there. The zigzag stitch should be just fine with all those layers.

These are the buildings I will take back off and then put back on. They are marked with an X. I have taken them off and put them on so many times at this point that I feel I know where they go without even looking!

Do you ever run into the fear of commitment near the end of a quilt design? If so tell me your story and how you moved forward. We all eventually have to move forward and finish.

  1. I can see why you are fearful. Fearful of making a mistake that cascades to the rest of the buildings. And it is so large, the handling will be somewhat awkward. I've probably had some trepidation in committing to production. We aren't following a pattern so second guessing if this or that will work is worrisome. Have I thought of all the obstacles and their solutions, have I missed something, is this any good, and on and on. But, my attitude now is, it's only fabric and an idea I had, that did or didn't work. I shrug and move on.
Hmmm, can't seem to change from anonymous. Laceflower

  2. For me it is almost always at the point where it is time to add quilting stitches. I am so afraid that my beautiful creation will be ruined by the stitching I add that I just want to stop right there and call it done. Of course, cannot, so it is a matter of doing my best to envision the quilting to be added and what threads to use, maybe a little test run first, and then taking that first stitch. Once I see how the quilting is actually enhancing, not ruining, the quilt, I can confidently move on.

I think you need not fear at this point. As you say, you are so familiar with it you just about don't need to refer back to the pattern to make sure things are properly in place. And any that are slightly off? Only you will know.
