It’s too easy to forget how difficult it is to work with a large quilt on a domestic sewing machine. It’s big, heavy, bulky and body aggravating. Big quilts are dramatic and I certainly wanted that with this quilt, but smaller ones are easier to deal with. I’ve managed to get the edges of all the buildings except the large brownstones attached to the background fabric. I’ve decided to finish stitching the features like windows in place for the buildings already attached before adding the large brownstones to the left side. It will just be less to manipulate through the machine to do that now. I am so glad I made the decision to tack most of those features in place before attaching the buildings to the backing fabric. With all the wrestling a lot of them would have fallen off. I would have really been going crazy. As it is I am just slightly going crazy with this part. Can’t wait for this part to be done. One bite at a time. Of course quilting this will not be much easier! Looking forward to that!!! At least that will really make the buildings come to life.
Here’s the quilt on the ironing board. It gives you an idea of how large this really is. Also is a closeup of one of the sets of skyscrapers that I’m getting ready to work on. The stabilizer has been ironed to the back of the fabric.
So now I’m starting to think about what to use for the backing fabric. I’m going to need a wide back because I’m not in the mood to piece it. I’m thinking about this one.
Any thoughts? Good luck wishes??

That is a spectacular 'hide your stitches' backing for sure. Have you done a quilt with the backing plain so you get to see all the quilting and have discarded that option? It would be great to see all the ghost buildings in thread on the back. Book some massage sessions to get you through! Best of luck. LF
ReplyDeleteHi Chris, what a challenge! I've never done such a large, intricate art quilt but they must be especially difficult to quilt. I love your choice of backing fabric. Best of luck - it's looking great!
