Finally making progress

I’ve had to admit a lot to myself while working on the recycle piece. I was beginning to think that I would not be able to pull this off.

I had to finally face the fact that I can’t match the colors in the image that I’m using for inspiration. Plastic  bags only come in so many colors and they are not like working with fabrics. So I had to work with what I have. It’s not like I can go to the quilt store and buy a fabric that will work.

I also had to really simplify things a lot. I usually make them more complicated! That’s not even a good idea when working with fabrics.

The plastic pieces get static charged easily and they stick to me and to each other. I keep losing pieces which has become frustrating.

I still have a way to go, but I’m finally getting there. The end is finally in sight. If you are wondering how these pieces are staying in place I have been using fusible web. The brand is Steam a seam lite. I don’t iron it on because that would be a disaster for plastics. It just sticks to the back of the plastic pieces.

Here’s the current photo and below is the inspiration.  The planets are just trial pieces at this point. I just wanted to see what it looked like.

I made a lot of progress yesterday. I will make more today.

Thanks for reading.

  1. You seem well on the way to making the show deadline, now that you have conquered a method of taming the plastics. LF

  4. Hmm - too late now perhaps but there is a spray-on anti-static product designed to keep clothing from sticking to your skin. Would think it might help working with these plastic bags. I so relate to the trap of trying to match perfectly colors in a reference photo or sketch - I especially find myself doing that when out urban sketching. I can't seem to do what so many other urban sketchers do and just get the forms of the scene and not worry if I'm capturing colors accurately. I want to capture what I see! This is probably a good experience for you having to make do with what you have available. :-) Remind us again of the theme of this challenge. Is it the wonder one?
