Is AI scary?

My husband wants me to enter my outer limits piece in the local art show this summer. The show is called Images. I told him that a piece made of plastic bags won’t even get accepted. He insists it will. I’m going to enter to see which of us is correct.

When filling out the applications you have to create a description for people that might be visually impaired. They send you to a website that creates it for you using AI. So here’s the image and below that is the AI description. It did a good job of describing the piece other than it’s not painted. It’s made of plastic bags. AI is starting to scare me. Is it scaring you?

“The image is a framed artwork depicting a surreal portrait of a face emerging from a cosmic background. The central face is painted in shades of blue and has prominent facial features with bright orange eyes and blue lips. Surrounding the face is a circular halo-like pattern in blue hues, representing a galaxy or cosmic energy. Radiating outward are abstract tree-like branches intertwined with small circular and star-like shapes, suggesting a connection to nature and the universe. The artwork is dynamic with vivid colors such as orange, blue, and yellow, conveying a sense of movement and energy. The background includes scattered small planets and stars, enhancing the cosmic theme. The lower right corner features the initials CS”

Thanks for reading.

  1. I am not a fan of AI's "computer-speak" --I think a written-by-you description would have been more spot-on;)) Just my thoughts....
I think this portrait is not "scarey" but rather other-worldly...I am so awed by how you handle plastic materials...good luck with your entry...

  2. I'm reluctant to involve myself in AI anymore than I have to, on line, for instance. We have professors in our family and some who are on committees for grants. AI is constantly used by college students and probably by HS kids too - as their writing associates. Sometimes it's easy to tell the difference between which is AI written and which are not. But the space between is negligible. One person I know no longer helps select grant submissions because the grantor wants to be sure they aren't written by AI. And that is currently impossible to do.

And AI as a business is now threatening farm land as they require a lot of land, and even more water resources. Those two problems are gigantically important to address before AI is building in areas that cannot afford to lose water resources. With climate change, we can't even determine when ,let alone where, that be be critically important to our survival. Just my thoughts. Pat

  3. I have to agree with both Julierose and Pat. I am adamantly opposed to the way AI has so quickly taken over writing and image production with people accepting its use without really thinking about how it is affecting them personally and on a larger scale as Pat pointed out. And I do find that scary. I boycott using it whenever it pops up to "help". I do realize that many of my "google" queries that I've done for years are probably being generated by AI now, but wherever I can, I disable AI help and AI generated images. The fewer people who use it the better imo. Really have to send a message to these tech people.

    1. Apologies for the double commenting but I didn't realize the first one didn't recognize me but it didn't look like it posted this anonymous one. And then when I wrote the other comment and posted, suddenly they both were there!

  4. I have to agree with Julierose and Pat. I do think it scary what AI can do and how easily people turn to it without a thought as to what it might be doing to their own thought/creative processes as well as to the planet as Pat points out. I boycott it whenever it pops up and have disabled it on my devices. I do realize that the "googling" I've done for years is now probably handled mostly by AI but I do not use their summaries or images inserted within the results. Kinda like my feelings for Amazon - too big too fast at the detriment of many and much so while so many knee jerk purchases to Amazon, I boycott them, look elsewhere to buy product. Just one small voice in the wilderness, but I know I am not alone.
