All my bags are packed. I'm ready to go...

I have packed up all my quilting stuff for the move.

All my fabric and stuff from my sewing room neatly stacked. My husband was shocked how large the pile was.

All of my quilts packed and ready to move. My walls look so bare without quilts on them. Hard to believe I have 4 huge boxes of quilts.

Still not sure when we will be moving. Our septic plans were approved by the county health department. Now we are getting estimates to get the work done. So far the one estimate is for $28,000. That does not include what we have already handed out which is around $5000 and more fees and expenses to come.
So the saga continues.

Now what will I work on?

I have my Hawaiian quilt packed and ready to work on while living with my MIL. Obviously needle turn applique is not my best skill!

Summary of designs

I came up with quite a few designs for abstract quilts in my class with EB.

These are my favorites:

 GRAY SCALE:

BLUE GREEN PIXEL DESIGNS: I prefer the one on the right and will definitely make it someday.

PURPLE AND TEAL PIXELS WITH OVERLAY AND THEN CHOPPED.

CONVERTED TO BLUE PALLETTE: Love the colors of this one, but then blue is my favorite color. It reminds me of the darkening sky right after sunset.

CONVERTED TO A RED PALLETTE.

So my favorite technique is:

  • Creating the pixels
  • Putting an abstract image on top of it
  • Cutting this apart and arranging the pieces.

Maybe this is something I can really expand upon. I think I have barely scratched the surface of this technique.

What do you think?

One plus one equals one

Can I play any more with those pixels? The answer is yes. I decided to combine an image from lesson 2 of the abstract class with the green pixel image from lesson 4 and then cut it up. All of this is done in Photoshop.

Here is the image from lesson 2. This was the lesson that you cut up strips of paper and arrange them.

Here is the combination of the two images sliced up. This is what E said about it.

“It is amazing - looks like a view through a factory window...love it...very interesting, unusual, and good depth.”

I am really pleased with how this one came out. What do you think?

Avoidance playing

I have not sewn anything since I faced a quilt last week. I am finding it hard to get motivated to do anything but play with pixelated images. Is this creating good designs or avoiding finishing projects?

Sunlight Shining Through Forest Nagano-ken, Japan

The original pixelated image. This is the same as the green one except that I changed the colors in Photoshop.

pixel overlay

Same image overlaid with black lines and adding some black borders.

pixelfrag1 (2)

Breaking the design up into square sections and adding move lines.

pixelfrag2 (2)

Breaking up the design into vertical sections.

pixelfrag3 (2)

Using paint bucket in Photoshop to change the background. When you do this you can’t tell exactly what it will change.

pixelfrag4 (2)

Changing the background back to black.

So what do you think? Am I avoiding doing my sewing? Or is this a necessary part of the design process? Or maybe a little of both?

Septic design went off to the county health department for approval so we are once again in a holding pattern. Can’t move forward until the plans are approved, Well as least we are now up to step 5 of the 17 step process!

What is the cost of a quilt?

Sunlight Shining Through Forest Nagano-ken, Japan I really liked my pixelated abstract design. It seems to call out to me to make it in Cherrywood fabrics. I love these fabrics and have used them in the past. I first used them in the Halloween quilt you see at the top of my blog.

Trick or Treat4

You can see them in the border (grays and blues) as well as the ground (the browns). The only trouble with the fabrics is they are expensive since they are hand dyes and they are only sold in bundles. I looked at their website to see what the total would be. The pictures below are the bundles I am considering.

4L.TELMD

8L.ForestFloor

8L.MIDGN

8L.OnyxLt

8L.RBNEG

I would have the fabrics that I would need and a bunch of extras. The total is 48 fat quarters which means 12 yards of fabric. The total cost is $216 which makes it almost $18 per yard. That price per yard does not freak me out, but that’s a lot of fabric!

Or maybe I should get to dyeing some fabric.

What do you think? It would look wonderful in Cherrywoods!

Sunlight Shining Through Forest Nagano-ken, Japan In case you are wondering where this pixelated image come from….It was from a photo that I turned into fabric using a bunch of filters in Photoshop. I did have the fabric printed at Spoonflower. I thought about just having my pixilated image printed, cutting out the squares and sewing them back together….the cheaters way! It would be a lot cheaper….

More abstract playing

Trying to relieve some stress today. They started digging test holes for the septic. Our soil does not drain so that means a big mound. This is going to be a long process. Basically they never should have put septic systems in this area due to the clay soil. There are 17 steps to replacing a septic in our town and we are on step 1. Tomorrow when the town witness comes we will be on step 2. There is a long way to go.

I used my fragmenting app on my ipad and fragmented the green abstract pixilated image. I also used some effects in Photoshop.

This was the original image.

Here are the variations:

pixelfrag1

pixelfrag3

pixelfrag4

pixelfrag5

Wonder what E will say about these. The class is nearly over and has been a great deal of fun. I basically took it to have a distraction from this septic business. It has helped.

Thanks for reading. Should I keep any of these designs?
