Avoidance playing

I have not sewn anything since I faced a quilt last week. I am finding it hard to get motivated to do anything but play with pixelated images. Is this creating good designs or avoiding finishing projects?

Sunlight Shining Through Forest Nagano-ken, Japan

The original pixelated image. This is the same as the green one except that I changed the colors in Photoshop.

pixel overlay

Same image overlaid with black lines and adding some black borders.

pixelfrag1 (2)

Breaking the design up into square sections and adding move lines.

pixelfrag2 (2)

Breaking up the design into vertical sections.

pixelfrag3 (2)

Using paint bucket in Photoshop to change the background. When you do this you can’t tell exactly what it will change.

pixelfrag4 (2)

Changing the background back to black.

So what do you think? Am I avoiding doing my sewing? Or is this a necessary part of the design process? Or maybe a little of both?

Septic design went off to the county health department for approval so we are once again in a holding pattern. Can’t move forward until the plans are approved, Well as least we are now up to step 5 of the 17 step process!

Thanks for reading.

  1. Not a waste of time! I like 4 and 6 (would probably like 5 if the green was more teal, like in #1. I have green issues.) Thanks for the details about your process. One day I'll spring for photoshop and try some of these things.

  2. Just listened to an old (March/2015) podcast by Alison Lee (Craftcast.com) about play. I wouldn't call what you're doing 'avoidance'. It is clearly an exploration...and there's a series in there somewhere, Chris. Keep going!

  3. I really like this purple palette and find your play very exciting! And yes, you are probably doing a little of both. Takes one to know one... ;-)

  4. I like this a lot, and I've really enjoyed all your EB class posts. I don't have Photoshop but this looks like a great feature in it!
