Am I motivated to move on?

Did you ever take a class and then decide that you don’t really want to finish the project? That’s how I feel about the rocks and pebbles class I took last Sunday. While it was fun I’m not sure I should have taken it. Maybe it’s just post class blues. It did make me realize that my true love is buildings. So why did I take it? I was pretty burned out on buildings after so many buildings last year….Boston collage, Pittsburgh pieces. I thought I needed a change. Maybe I just needed a break and not another class.

So here’s my rocks from the class.  Making the rocks was pretty fun and addicting. The fabrics all all hand dyed or hand painted rust dyed fabrics. The background is snow dyed and I picked it so it would look like water and a shore line with a deposit of smooth rocks and pebbles. The small snippets of fabric is where I would make French knots and add beads. I also have some shells and natural irregular shaped pearls from a necklace that broke years ago.

The rocks are made from fabric wrapped around Timtex with one or 2 layers of batting glued  to it. So what’s left to do? I have to machine quilt the background, add facings, hand stitch the rocks in place, and hand stitch French knots and add beads. So a lot of handwork that I can take with me. Is it worth finishing? I know it will look better once I quilt it and stitch the rocks in place.

  1. Looks like it was interesting. I took Natalya’s class thx to you and enjoyed it. I’m still working on my project it will definitely take a while. It is nice seeing how other people do what they do and taking it to do what we want to do whether it works or not. I have a few class ufos hanging about the studio. I like my starts but never quite finish them. Good luck!

  2. Hmmm - I guess my first impression is that these need to be part of a much bigger piece so that it is clear what they are. I envision a woodland scene with a water feature and other dimensional accents. To be honest, I don't get the need to wrap these around Timtex. But I do love the fabrics you chose to make these from - it really does make them look like rocks.

  4. Hi Chris, I thought that it was you in the class when you left - I recognized the building on your wall! I know how you feel. I did enjoy the class but I have so many projects on the go that I'm not sure when this one will get done. I'm not sure that I chose great fabric for it. Good luck either way and I hope that a break does you good!

  5. Wow, your choice of rock fabric really makes the rocks look rocky. I have an artist in my critique group who loves making rocks, but as part of a larger nature scene and they work well in that context. I think you've got a portion of a larger nature scape going here. A departure from buildings for sure, much more organic.
