I always hold my breath when I wash a new quilt especially one with dark colors. I soaked all the fabrics before making the quilt, but I still worry. I checked the quilt after it was washed and I did not see any fabrics that ran onto the white. I dried it rather than let it air dry because I’ve had fabric dye leach into others during that process.
When it came out of the dryer there was some contact dye transfer. The black transferred a grayish color to the white. It happened in 2 places with the same black. One is barely noticeable. The other was worse. I used some blue Dawn on the one that was worse. It did help, but the dye is set at this point. At least it’s gray and the white fabric has gray in it. Thank goodness it wasn’t the orange or purple fabrics. I don’t want to do too much more and make it worse. Most people would not even notice it unless it was pointed out. I used the fabric for 3 cats. One had no issues at all.
I could soak the quilt again, but not sure that contact transfer would not occur in the future. I did soak that offending black fabric until it appeared no more dye was coming out. I think I should leave well enough alone at this point. I want to put the quilt back in the dryer to fluff it up where I used the Dawn.
Here’s some photos of the quilt on our bed.

What a beautiful finish on your Kitty quilt...I really couldn't notice the dye transfer--I also think the backing you chose is perfect. It's definitely the "Cat's Meow" ;))) nice work hugs, Julierose
ReplyDeleteWonderful finish! Your daughter will be thrilled, I'm sure! And congratulations on your Art Alliance win!
