Picking out the fabric for them is a lot harder. In the original painting that I'm using for inspiration they are pretty light orange that I think really too light for a night time scene. All the faces are the same and they are all oriented the same way. Pretty boring.
I'm not sure how defined I should be making the vertical lines that pumpkins have. I will be quilting along those lines which will sink them and define them further. I have tried paint as well as markers and fabric inks. I have tried some old Stonehenge fabrics that I had as well as a batik (brown copper orange). Also tried a reddish orange very mottled hand dyed. I will be using more than one for sure. As my husband says I am over analyzing it. In order to make those eyes glow there has to be enough contrast with the value of the pumpkin. Also now I'm trying to figure out if I should just appliqué the eyes on top or cut out the pumpkin and put the yellow fabric on the bottom. Will it really make a difference? Easier to put on top for sure.
Tell me what you think. And yes that is a black cat. Must cut him larger when I make him for real.

I would think putting them on top before you applique the pumpkins in place may be easier--I am no applique specialist--I struggle with it...
ReplyDeleteI like your fabric choices--really neat hugs, Julierose
Heck, what kind of artists would we be if we didn't over-analyze a bit to get to the best solution? ;-) You are so right that identical pumpkins all facing the same way would be a bit boring - I like what you've come up with instead. You are probably right that you can get the right amount of line on the pumpkins with the stitching - had not thought of that. Being a masochist, I would undoubtedly cut out the eyes, nose, mouth of each pumpkin so that the yellow fabric would show from underneath but that's just me. Kind of a toss-up on the orange fabrics though, as we can view them on the screen. I'm leaning toward the stonehenge fabric though, although using some of each is also a good idea. Coming along nicely.
ReplyDeleteI think all your pumpkin fabrics look great! And the yellow is perfect! And I’m very impressed with the gates!
