It's been so long I've forgotten

I've been working on this Boston collage quilt so long that I've forgotten about how I made the earlier buildings in the quilt. I look at those buildings and I wonder how did I make some of the decisions that I made at the time? Those buildings look amazing and will only look even better once they are quilted and details are added. How did I pick particular fabrics? All those struggles have faded into the past. A decision that I labored over and over analyzed is now forgotten.

I thought for fun I would post 3 photos of the quilt progress. One from early on, one from the middle, and one current one.

Early photo of skyscrapers

Midway progress

Almost done

There are plenty of other photos with more detailed progress and some day I want to put them in sequence and create a video. I have plenty of photos of where I place a fabric on the quilt that I thought that I was going to use for a building only to end of using something else. Maybe it's good that this project has taken so long. The fabric choices I would have made earlier if I had rushed the process are different than what I ultimately chose. I am a slow worker and that's OK with me.

A lot of the orange windows in the Almost done photo are now cut to size, fused, and placed on the quilt. I still have a bunch to go, but at this point I just do a few at a time. I do see some orange ones that I might change out for a less intense orange. I think I also eliminated some of the orange windows from last week.

Do you often forget all the details that went into a long project? Or do you remember them?

Thanks for reading. Happy Halloween.

  1. I used to be able to remember every single detail of making a project, but not so much anymore, even the more recent ones. That is why I am so glad I've documented all my quilts so well and have the extra advantage of checking blog posts for more details. I am not surprised that so much of the beginning of this quilt is just a hazy memory for you! You've been at it for a long time and it is so intricate.

  2. In my design group I sometimes get asked what/how did you do that. Really, I can't remember, it was a decision in the time, it worked and I moved on. Although.... if it didn't work, I usually remember that boo boo.
